Types of Vegetarians

Whether you’re considering becoming a vegetarian or hosting a party and want to understand the different types of vegetarians; you’ve come to the right place!

Pescatarian – Avoids red meat and poultry but consumes seafood, eggs and dairy. A pescatarian would be comfortable having salmon and asparagus with hollandaise sauce, but would not be okay with Turkey and stuffing.

Pollotarian – Does not eat red meat or seafood, but consumes poultry, eggs and dairy.  A chicken Cobb salad would be perfect for the pollotarian.

Lacto-ovo vegetarian – The most predominant type of vegetarians. They do not eat red meat, poultry or fish, but do eat eggs and dairy products.  A vegetable curry with rice and ice cream for dessert would be right up their alley.

Lacto vegetarian – will not eat red meat, poultry, fish or eggs, but do consume dairy products. A pesto pasta dish with a caprese salad would be perfect for the lacto vegetarian.

Ovo Vegetarian – does not eat meat, poultry, fish or dairy products, but do eat eggs. They would enjoy something like a quinoa and pomegranate salad and dairy free deviled eggs.

Vegan – This is the strictest form of vegetarianism. They do not consume meat, poultry, fish or any products derived from animals including eggs and dairy. They also typically will not wear leather or fur. A simple pasta dish with lemon, oil and garlic or a falafel sandwich would be great options to serve a vegan.
